Ranong in Thailand
Ranong is capital of the Ranong province, located in Southern Thailand. It has very little tourist influence, so the small town is considered to still be very culturally intact. The small town of Ranong is a great destination for those looking to get a good feel for a true Thai village, instead of a commercialized resort geared towards tourists.
Getting to Ranong usually means taking a bus or boat. The airlines have recently been shut down, so trips to and from Ranong via flight are no longer possible. This has made the town even more secluded to tourists looking to pass through Ranong, or to stay a few days to get away from the hustle of the city life. Boats are usually the best way to go, as they take around 20 minutes to arrive in Ranong- whereas buses can take up to 3 hours.
Since Ranong has been void of tourist attraction, the scenery it holds is still very much beautiful. Waterfalls, canyons, springs, and hills all make a pleasing landscape for the surrounding area. There is a national park near Ranong that is truly worth a visit, as it holds some of the most scenic land around Ranong. Hills might not seem too exciting, but the Bald Hill is famous in Ranong, and offers great photograph opportunities.
One of the best ways to experience the natural beauty of Ranong is through the Visa Run. A Visa Run is essentially a trip around the area that allows visitors to see all the landscape that Ranong and its surrounding area has to offer. This usually incorporates several modes of transportation- from buses to boats. Interesting enough, visitors will probably be offered to buy prescription drugs under the table from locals around the area. Since the laws of the visitor’s country don’t apply, this is usually overlooked.
The markets of Ranong are still fairly impressive, given that the town is fairly small. Night markets and booths are constantly up, selling different types of souvenirs and types of food. Much like these markets, the hotels are likewise just as impressive. While budget hotels are indeed available, more expensive hotels that cost around ten times as much as the normal going rate. This gives the upper class a pleasant stay, and a very good way to relax when trying to escape the stress of Thai cities. The lack of entertainment is far from undesirable- Ranong is easily a well deserved trip for tourists that appreciate nature’s beauty.
Ranong will very likely not give an incredibly entertaining experience for thrill seekers and avid party goers. If a more dramatic and exciting form of entertainment is desired, it will have to be found elsewhere. Otherwise, tourists will see a great reason to visit Ranong for its landscape. Ranong even caters to more high class guests with expensive hotels, so the wealthier people will no doubt see a great get away spot in Ranong. The Visa Run is also good for traveling students to see the world, and should be experienced if a trip to Thailand is expected.
